Servant Cemetery

Posted by Tracey (Maryland, United States) on 3 June 2009 in Miscellaneous and Portfolio.

Ellicott City, MD

This was the "cemetery" that was attached to the Ellicott family cemetery. The Ellicott's were Quakers and did not believe in slavery, but they did have servants. When their staff died, they would bury them in the field next to the family plot. The weeds have overtaken the area and no one cares for the land there. The stones are falling and sinking. Most of theheadstones are unmarked. The only fence left is this small section here. The cemetery dates back to 1772.
