On the Hunt

This was taken with my brand new Canon 5D! I wasn't too familiar with it yet, as I had only purchased it the day before. I was happy with its performance!

This was taken at Ladew Topiary Gardens on their opening day. It is a tradition for the start of the last fox hunt of the year to begin on the property. The lady turned around in her saddle was the leader of the pack, so to speak, and she was giving direction to those behind her. In the coming week I will post more from my trip to Ladew.

Beautiful shot, Tracey. It will definitely take a while for you to get familiar with the 5D (as I am still discovering things about my 40D and I've had it since late January), but ... oh, the fun you will have! Enjoy!

This is a great shot, colours and composition are fantastic. I think the original shot, must have some great detail thats a bit lost in the compression or resize. I see your focal length is 300mm, what lens are you using?

@Graham Russon: He Graham, I had my "long lens" on. It is a 75-300mm. I only had 2 lenses that transferred over to the 5D and the was the only zoom. The only other one I have right now (soon to change as I am purchasing a new lens too!) was a 50mm prime. So for this event, the zoom was a better choice!

wow . . not many folks are in the full-size sensor league and that 5D should prove an incredible piece of kit. I like the vibrancy of this one and the natural composition it holds.

Wow! the colours are glorious. Fortunatly or unfortunatly, whichever side of the fence you sit on, hunting is banned here in the UK (well hunting Foxes is) so we don't get to see this colourful spectacal any more.

And I was jealous of the Rebel. Looks like the 5D does very well. Of course, it has something to do with the person behind it as well. Nice shot.

It seems that a lot of the Aminus3 sites are using Canon. Of those moving up the DSLR chain it seems that many go the Canon or Nikon route. Just curious what it was that drew you to your choice?

@Bonj: Thanks for the compliment Bonj! I chose Canon by default. Several years ago my husband bought me the Rebel as a gift. I used that for several years and felt like I had "outgrown" it. I already owned 4 lenses (only 2 of which I later found out that would work with the 5D) that were Canon lenses, so I wanted to stay with them. Also, I was already used to the nomenclature and functions of the Canon, as Nikon is very different. I didn't want to relearn a whole new system. Lastly, I have a professional photographer friend, Jodie Otte of the Black Horse Studio, that guided me by telling me what was comparable in the Nikon field and in the Canon field. In my price range, the best value for me was the Canon 5D.

This really does hold together very well as a composition. It has so much detail and it's a pleasure to look at. I might just burn in the brightest highlights a little, myself, but that's a detail. Congratuations on the 5D. It's going to inspire you and keep you going for a long time, I would imagine.
