Homestead

This week I will be posting pictures of my hike through the Peaks of Otter in the mountains of Virginia. This farm was built in the mid 1800's and was occupied by the same family until the 1940's. Now the Parks Service upkeeps the property as a historical site.

Whenever I see a house nestled like that, I find myself thinking of the 1800's when that was an empty knoll and someone must have said “I think we’ll build her here”. Wise choice.

What a beautiful little house, I could just imagine the view from the porch before the tree's grew, it must have been breathtaking. So glad it's being preserved.

Great shot Tracey, the balance truly is spot on. Looking at the image leaves me to think that the winter's did harvest solid readers in that household.

@Alvin: I think you must be right. There was one dirt access road 1.8 miles from any other buildings in the area. They used horse and wagon to move about the area. It must have been a long a lonely winter.

Really like the angle, with you slightly elevated from the house. Also, I like the very white of the house, which contrasts nicely with the landscape colors.
